March 17, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Viasna Human Rights Center documented at least 156 people, including 46 women, sentenced on politically-motivated criminal charges in February 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the human rights group, five more people were tried in absentia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk, with 74 convictions, accounts for most politically-motivated reprisals under the Criminal Code, followed by the Minsk region with 26, the Hrodna region with 13, the Brest region with 20, the Viciebsk region with 12, the Mahilo\u016d region with six, and the Homiel region with five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February saw a surge in persecution of several members of families or whole families, usually tried on violent disorder charges. At least seven families faced the charge last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was also a rise in persecution of victims for a second and third time. Viasna identified at least 11 such cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Pozirk <\/em>reported that the human rights community designated 39 people as political prisoners in February. Human rights groups also demanded that authorities exonerate 16 former political prisoners released last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
