March 22, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian law enforcement agencies reported 73,270 crimes last year, 14 percent fewer than in 2023, yet the number of economic crimes went up by more than 19 percent to 1,861, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of the National Statistics Committee’s (Bielstat) data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About a quarter of all economic crimes involved manufacturing, storage or sale of counterfeit money with economic activity violations at 19 percent and tax evasion crimes exceeding 15 percent. About 4 percent of crimes were linked to purchase or sale of goods obtained by criminal means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of 37,839 people who were charged with committing crimes in 2024, 1,086 were suspected of economic crimes, which is 67 percent more compared to the 2023 level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 1,500 people were convicted of extremism-related crimes last year with no acquittals, Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied said earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremism-related crimes are mostly committed online and fell from 2,016 in 2023 to 1,256 in 2024, the state-run media reported, citing the official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2020 political crisis, authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism. The crackdown on critics and their online activities continues unabated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
