March 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The number of Belarusian holders of Polish residence permits surged from 28,000 in August 2020 to more than 143,000 as of late February, the Belorusy v Polshe<\/em> Telegram channel reported, citing the Polish official statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of these, 88,684 Belarusians have temporary residence permits; 42,378, permanent residence permits; 8,699, additional protection status; 1,655 are EU residence holders; 883 are refugees and 637 were granted temporary protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Belarusians, 62 percent, received residence permits based on employment in Poland, while family reunification and other reasons accounted for 17 percent, each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geographically, about a third of the Belarusian community in Poland is located in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship and Warsaw. Some 15,000 reside in the Podlaskie Voivodeship and Bia\u0142ystok near the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total number of Belarusians in Poland is hard to estimate due to their different emigration status but Polish authorities said it may exceed 350,000 people. Over the past few years, Belarusians have accounted for the second-largest national minority in Poland after Ukrainians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2020 political crisis in Belarus, Poland became a primary destination for Belarusians fleeing politically-motivated persecution at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
