March 24, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The Lithuanian defense ministry has proposed banning Lithuanians who also hold citizenships of Belarus, China or Russia from enrolling in the General Jonas \u017demaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, BNS<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry included this provision in the government\u2019s directive draft, along with the requirement for the academy cadets to report citizenships other than Lithuanian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If approved, the move would ensure that military personnel holding citizenship of unfriendly states will not become potential targets of recruitment or other hostile intelligence activities, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Vilnius banned soldiers and officers from travelling to Belarus, Russia and China while off duty, citing risks and threats to national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security services of these countries keep tabs on Lithuanians with access to classified information and seek to recruit them, the Lithuanian government argued, noting that Russian and Belarusian intelligence agents interrogate and provoke Lithuanians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
