March 24, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Operational and Analytical Center (OAC), a Belarusian agency in charge of information security, will limit internet access, making Belarus-based websites unavailable for users outside the country from 7 p.m. today to midnight tomorrow, hoster.by<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move should ensure protection against potential IT threats, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Minsk used a similar strategy on the last day of early voting and the main voting day in the Belarusian presidential election in late January, as Alaksandar \u0141ukasenka secured another extension of his 30-year rule in Belarus. Tomorrow, he is expected to take the oath of office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities shut down the internet for three days during the 2020 presidential election. Politically-motivated reprisals have been ongoing in the country since then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date that \u0141uka\u0161enka picked for his inauguration marks the 107th anniversary of Belarus\u2019 short-lived independence in 1918 and is one of the major commemorative dates for the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current Belarusian government does not recognize March 25, also known as Freedom Day, as an official holiday. After 2020 presidential election, any attempts to publicly celebrate anniversaries led to arrests, trials and jail terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Cichano\u016dskaja called for solidarity with Belarus on March 25 and announced numerous rallies by Belarusian communities abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
