March 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> World Athletics has upheld sanctions against athletes from Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe announced the decision at a press conference after a meeting of the federation’s Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council believes the current sanctions are appropriate and does not see a need to change or amend them unless the situation worsens or a peace agreement is reached on Ukraine, Coe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions completely ban Belarusians and Russians from competing in contests under the auspices of World Athletics. As a result, athletes from the two countries were unable to participate in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. Representatives of other sports competed there as neutrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to athletics, a complete ban on Belarusians and Russians applies to team sports and major winter sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restrictions were introduced on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee following the Russian military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Minsk supports Russia’s aggression against its southern neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
