March 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Soldiers and security officers swore allegiance to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on Minsk’s State Flag Square on Tuesday, contrary to the tradition of pledging loyalty to the republic, not its leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security Council head Alaksandar Valfovi\u010d read the oath to \u0141uka\u0161enka, who took the podium in full dress uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We, the military and security personnel of the Republic of Belarus, assure the entire Belarusian people and you, comrade commander-in-chief, that we are always ready to reliably defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our homeland,” Lt. Gen. Valfovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The servicemen swore to “serve selflessly the Belarusian people and the president of the Republic of Belarus,” after which the national anthem was played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oath of enlistment posted on the defense ministry’s website does not mention the head of state. Soldiers swear to defend independence, territorial integrity and the constitutional order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka was sworn in today, after the opposition and the West dismissed January’s election as a sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
