March 26, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>A group of independent UN experts has released a statement, calling on Minsk to address allegations of ill-treatment of women convicted in politically-motivated cases in Belarus, the UN Human Rights Office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoor detention conditions, combined with deliberate ill-treatment, including punitive solitary confinement, put their health at serious risk,\u201d they stressed, citing the life-threatening condition of Viktoryja Kul\u0161a, who was imprisoned for running an opposition chat during 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kul\u0161a, held at a women’s penal colony No 24 near the Homiel region’s Re\u010dyca, suffered a serious deterioration in her physical and mental health, the experts noted. “She has been denied adequate medical and psychological care and continues to be subjected to severe ill-treatment,” the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities filed disobedience charges against Kul\u0161a three times to keep her behind bars longer. This practice \u201chas become yet another cruel tool wielded by prison authorities to punish those deemed disloyal,\u201d the experts said, calling on Minks to immediately stop persecuting regime critics on this basis and release those convicted of this offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, a former inmate at the same penal colony where Kul\u0161a is held, described the facility as a \u201cslaughterhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts also raised concerns about three senior victims of politically-motivated reprisals: Alena Hna\u016dk, Volha Majorava, and Iryna Takar\u010duk. “Alleged prolonged incommunicado detention of Ms. Alena Hna\u016dk increases the risk of her enforced disappearance,\u201d they stressed, noting the continued failure of Belarus to address these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
