March 26, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Three Belarusian companies with links to the sanctioned potash and salt giant Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij are supplying the Norta de-icing agent for roads and pavements to the European Union, says<\/a> the Belarusian Investigative Center (BIC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the companies is E\u016drapiejkaje Ahrarnaje Ahenctva owned by Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij Ahra and the Estonia-based European Agricultural Agency. Belarusian businessman Alaksandar Bacha\u010denka holds a stake in the latter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The de-icing agent is basically a rebranded industrial salt, which Belarus exported to the EU in large quantities before the introduction of western sanctions, the journalists noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the same mineral with a probability approaching 100 percent,” chemist Siarhiej Biesarab told the BIC. “It is the same in terms of the list of possible impurities and the indicators of the concentration levels of these impurities. There are essentially no valuable marker compounds apart from common salt \u2014 sodium chloride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, a Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij representative confirmed to the BIC that one of the companies buys sanctioned industrial salt from them to sell it as a de-icing agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij has been under the EU sanctions since 2021 over allegations of involvement in human rights abuses. Its former CEO Ivan Ha\u0142avaty was also sanctioned for his links to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his family members as well as alleged involvement in politically-motivated reprisals at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the European Court of Justice rejected appeals from Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij, Ha\u0142avaty and the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC) against EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij remains a key source of income for the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime and enjoys preferential treatment to export potash fertilizers, according to the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
