March 27, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>After appointing new officials to the National Bank of Belarus,Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has praised ex-governor Pavie\u0142 Ka\u0142\u0142aur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They did well there at the National Bank,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, as quoted by his press office. “Let’s be frank, they did not fail in difficult times. Whatever one thinks or doesn’t think, they have done a lot for the country.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler told Alaksandar Jahora\u016d, the central bank’s new first deputy head, that the new management should stay in touch with Ka\u0142\u0142aur. “He should always be at hand. Whether you take his advice or not, he will express his standpoint. He’s a good banker. But as time passes, the new generation should take the helm of the country.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka announced that he will meet with the regulator’s top management soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also assuaged concerns among commentators that the central bank may lose its independence after the reshuffle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have already said this at negotiations in Russia,” he said. “It is normal and good for a central bank not to depend too much on the government. But we have a system. If there are no contacts and common ground with the government, there is the president to make decisions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted “normal” cooperation between the central bank and the government during Ka\u0142\u0142aur’s reign, “despite some differences.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He instructed the new management to establish an order in “the work of commercial banks and their relationship with the regulator.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Commercial banks should not be a country inside the country . . . The system should be manageable,” \u0141uka\u0161enka stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka accepted Ka\u0142\u0142aur\u2019s resignation on March 10, after more than 10 years in office. The appointment of Raman Ha\u0142o\u016d\u010danka as new head of the National Bank of Belarus is a \u201cvery alarming signal for those who work in the financial sector,\u201d economic expert Jaras\u0142a\u016d Raman\u010duk has told Pozirk<\/em> on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
