{"id":1319,"date":"2023-08-14T13:18:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T10:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=1319"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","slug":"poland-to-decide-on-belarus-border-fence-at-referendum-in-october","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/1319\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland to decide on Belarus border fence at referendum in October"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 14,&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>.<\/strong>&nbsp;Poles will decide whether to keep or remove the border fence at the shared border with Belarus at a referendum scheduled for October 15,&nbsp;<em>TVP<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tvpworld.com\/72001803\/last-referendum-question-to-concern-barrier-on-polish-belarusian-border-def-min\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other referendum questions concern the European Union&#8217;s migration deal, the national pension system and the sale of state-owned companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The most important issues, those that concern security, should be decided by citizens,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>TVP<\/em>&nbsp;cited Polish Defense Minister Mariusz B\u0142aszczak as saying. &#8220;Poland could become [Vladimir] Putin\u2019s next target, and our security is under real threat. That\u2019s why we are consistently strengthening the Polish Army and building a barrier on the border with Belarus and Russia.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, Polish Border Guard reported the completion of a 206-kilometer fence at the border with Belarus equipped with 3,000 surveillance cameras and 400 km of detector cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fence construction was one of the measures to resolve the migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border which dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated in November 2021 when thousands of migrants set up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the start of 2023, 19,136 foreigners tried to illegally cross into Poland from Belarus, with 1,578 attempts in August alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 14,&nbsp;BPN.&nbsp;Poles will decide whether to keep or remove the border fence at the shared border with Belarus at a referendum scheduled for October 15,&nbsp;TVP&nbsp;reported.
