April 3, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Security Council chief Alaksandar Valfovi\u010d has accused the European Union neighbors of building up forces near Belarus and intensifying their “aggressive rhetoric.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Recently, we received information that the Poles are deploying new operational units, reconnaissance battalions and equipment in the Suwa\u0142ki Gap area. They are trying to defend themselves from an imaginary threat from the east. But this looks so funny today because the Belarusian Armed Forces, the military organization of our state, do not prioritize increasing military budgets or the number of exercises,” Valfovi\u010d said, the defense ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian army will continue to take new types of weapons and military equipment into service, with an emphasis on engineering and installing defenses across the territory, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Suwa\u0142ki Gap is a narrow strip in Poland and Lithuania that some Western experts call a \u201cweak link.\u201d Its occupation by Belarusian and Russian forces would cut off the Baltics from the rest of the EU and connect Belarus\u2019 Hrodna region with Kaliningrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2024, while inspecting troops near the border with Lithuania, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka asked the commander of the Northwestern Operational Command how many kilometers separated them from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cForty-two kilometers,\u201d Maj. Gen. Alaksandar Navumienka replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s practically nothing,\u201d said \u0141uka\u0161enka, suggesting that the Suwa\u0142ki Gap was vulnerable. \u201cIt\u2019s wrong for them to behave like that. Now you would have to confront the Baltic republics,\u201d he told the general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
