April 5, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Armenians deserve a \u201cfree, democratic and peaceful future in Europe,\u201d Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said on X, commenting on a law establishing the legal framework for Armenia’s accession to the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA new chapter begins\u201d for Armenia, the politician stressed after the Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed the law yesterday, following the approval by the parliament in mid-February. The move is taking place amid tensions between Yerevan and Russia-led regional blocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Armenia suspended its engagement with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) over the alleged failure to address \u201cexternal aggression at the borders of sovereign Armenia in 2021 and 2022.\u201d  Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that the CSTO posed a threat to Armenia\u2019s existence, sovereignty and statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yerevan also has strained relations with Minsk. In June 2024, Pashinyan said that neither he nor any other Armenian official would travel to Belarus as long as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka was in power. The head of the Armenian government said that in connection with \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s remarks supportive of Azerbaijan made at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Siarhiej Ra\u010dko\u016d, a Belarusian MP in charge of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, warned Armenia against pursuing its EU membership bid, noting that the country would lose the benefits of being a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, another Russia-led alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
