April 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus was one of 46 countries that imposed death sentences in 2024, according to a report on capital punishment in the world published by Amnesty International today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights group confirmed death sentences in Egypt (365), Iraq (over 200), Nigeria (over 186) and other countries. Belarus issued one sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the organization, last year such sentences were carried out in Iran (over 972), Saudi Arabia (over 345), Iraq (over 63), Yemen (over 38), Somalia (over 34), the United States (over 25), Egypt (over 13), Singapore (over 9), Kuwait (over 6), Oman (over 3), as well as Afghanistan, Vietnam, China, North Korea and Syria, for which there is no exact data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the human rights activists counted at least 2,075 death sentences and at least 1,508 executions worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amnesty International called Belarus the only country in Europe that uses the death penalty. Last year, it sentenced to death Rico Krieger, a German national found guilty of covert operations and mercenarism. The group noted that he has been pardoned and handed over to Germany as part of a major prisoner swap between Russia and the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Due to state secrecy in relation to the use of the death penalty, Amnesty International was unable to confirm how many people remain under sentence of death in Belarus,” the report reads. “However, it is known that a Belarusian man sentenced to death on 19 October 2023 appealed his sentence at the Supreme Court and was heard and rejected on 9 January 2024.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is believed that he remained under sentence of death at the end of 2024 since there was no available information to the contrary nor on his possible execution. Against this backdrop, Amnesty International believes that at least one person was on death row in Belarus at the end of 2024.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a reference to Alaksandar Taratuta who was found guilty of murdering his young son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
