April 17,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The Bundestag will not invite the ambassadors of Russia and Belarus to the central commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on May 8, Der Spiegel<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian and Belarusian diplomats were denied the invitation, the Bundestag press office told dpa<\/em>, citing the federal government’s assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the German foreign ministry had advised federal states, municipalities and memorial sites against allowing representatives of Russia and Belarus to participate in WW2-themed commemorative events. Berlin feared that Moscow might \u201cinstrumentalize it and abuse it in connection with its war of aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Russia launched a full-scale war on Ukraine with the support of authorities in Minsk in February 2022, many democratic countries preferred not to invite Belarusian and Russian diplomats to events, including commemoration of the victims of the atomic bombings in Japan or the anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald, Mittelbau-Dora and Auschwitz concentration camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
