August 3, BPN.<\/em><\/strong> A senior adviser to Belarus’ opposition leader says the new European Union sanctions adopted<\/a> today are an “important signal” to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka that “there will be no impunity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franak Via\u010dorka, who advises \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, told BPN <\/em>that the sanctions against \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime had been delayed for more than a year, which allowed him to escalate repression and arrests, and to further align Belarus with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via\u010dorka said the regime’s lobbyists in the West failed to block earlier sanctions on potash, a fertilizer widely used in agriculture. But he said the new sanctions are “disproportionate to the scale of repression and crimes of the regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that even more restrictions are needed and that the opposition is working to persuade its partners to consider sanctions against Russia for undermining Belarus’ sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
