April 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> On March 20, after consolidating more than a dozen complaints from Belarusians into one case, the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) recognized that Belarus is massively violating rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the Homielskaja Viasna human rights website reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says that in 2018\u20132019, Belarusian officials banned peaceful assemblies in at least 22 different cities across the country. “By submitting applications to hold pickets, concerned citizens tried to draw attention to violations of civil and political rights.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After numerous rejections in Belarusian courts, 17 people filed complaints with the HRC, the only international protection mechanism available to Belarusians at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, the committee found that all bans on peaceful assemblies were not necessary and proportionate. Officials failed to prove that restricting freedom of peaceful assembly and expression was justified under international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision adopted in Geneva obliges Belarus to compensate the 17 applicants for fines and legal costs and to bring national legislation into line with international human rights standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Belarus must inform the committee on implementing the decision within 180 days and disseminate this information widely in its official languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
