April 19, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Police have arrested at least five people in Dziar\u017eynsk, Minsk region, over the past few days and charged them with violent disorder over their alleged participation in 2020 postelection protests, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on April 18 included 50 new additions to the interior ministry\u2019s list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d which now has 5,192 entries. All recently blacklisted persons were convicted on charges that authorities use to persecute political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry and the Committee for State Security (KGB) branded the ChestnOK <\/em>project of sports journalist and blogger Alaksandar Ivulin, a former prisoner, as well as the Va\u015bminoh<\/em> education initiative as “extremist” groups, Pozirk <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia\u2019s Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested a Belarusian man in the Krasnodar province for allegedly planning a terrorist attack at the behest of Ukraine\u2019s security services, the FSB\u2019s press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ra\u015bcis\u0142a\u016d \u010cachovi\u010d, 22, passed away after battling cancer, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. In November 2021, he was fined on charges of causing property damage linked to protest activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of April 19, human rights defenders identified at least 1,201 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
