April 20, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has admitted the effects of western sanctions as he addressed Orthodox believers during an Easter service in Ta\u0142a\u010dyn, Viciebsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI talked about this last time, on Christmas Day \u2013 these are not easy years, especially this one,” his press office quoted him as saying. “We need to mobilize, unite and get through it. The turbulence, chaos and confusion in the world are tremendous. It’s just that we, the authorities, are trying to shield you from this chaos. . .\u00a0.\u00a0 But the [recent] years have been very difficult and demanding, especially under the sanctions on our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler admits or denies the effects of sanctions depending on political circumstances. Earlier this year, he scolded officials for using sanctions to justify their failure in promoting Belarusian exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late January, as he extended his 30-year rule in Belarus, he admitted that the country faced \u201csome difficulties\u201d due to sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
