August 4, BPN<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on August 3 with 14 new political prisoners identified by human rights defenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141arysa Ne\u015bciaruk from Ivanava, Brest region, was arrested for allegedly disturbing public order after Piotr Miare\u010dka, a local TikToker, had informed the police that she was listening to a Ukrainian song at home, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested Julija Da\u016dletava, a Ranak TV<\/em> editor from \u015aviet\u0142ahorsk, Homiel region, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Authorities did not disclose the charges against her. In June, her eight colleagues were arrested and fined over coverage of an explosion at a local pulp and cardboard mill that killed several people. The information ministry blocked access to Ranak<\/em>‘s website and declared its social media extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017dana Kaz\u0142o\u016dskaja and Andrej Kruh\u0142o\u016d are under arrest for signing up for the opposition Pieramoha Plan, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivan Panamaro\u016d was arrested in Minsk for a message to an opposition chatbot, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police said it arrested a woman who allegedly featured in Mika\u0142aj Mamina\u016d’s film about the 2020 protests released on Delfi<\/em>‘s YouTube channel on July 27, a pro-government source said. That was is the fourth arrest linked to the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Sa\u0142aducha from Minsk faces criminal charges over 2020 protests, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in the Brest region sentenced Zachar Siniako\u016d, 18, and Jelisiej Ku\u017aniaco\u016d, 19, to 18 months and two and a half years in prison, respectively, the Brest branch of Viasna reported. Authorities persecuted them for tearing down state flags in Vojskaja, Kamianiec district. Ku\u017aniaco\u016d had already served a prison term in another politically-motivated case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Folk singer Patrycyja \u015avicina was given two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement on charges of gross violations of public order, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej Kudasa\u016d, currently serving an 11-year prison term, went on a new trial on extremism-related charges in Homiel, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biology scholar Natalla Martusievi\u010d from Mahilo\u016d was charged with inciting hatred in online comments, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viktoryja Kul\u0161a, currently serving a lengthy prison term for running an opposition Telegram channel and chat, was placed in a punishment cell for 10 days, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremist content update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities blacklisted the Bie\u0142aruskaja Radykalnia<\/em> Telegram channel as well as the kuzmitskaya3<\/em>, Be1arus 2020<\/em> and Kapibara z Bie\u0142arusi <\/em>TikTok accounts as extremist content, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups declared 14 more people political prisoners, BPN <\/em>reported. They were charged, jailed or convicted for allegedly disrupting public order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 4, human rights defenders identified at least 1,494 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
