May 2, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> As Belarus and Russia prepare for large-scale celebrations on May 9 to mark an anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has reiterated for the second time in the last four days that he does not mind people wearing the ribbon of Saint George, a military symbol widely associated with Russian irredentism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you want to wear the ribbon [of Saint George], please [go ahead]. If you want to wear, you know, our ribbons [an apple tree flower adorned with a red-green ribbon\u2014a symbol specially designed in Belarus for the occasion], please [go ahead]. Am I right? We are friends, we don\u2019t wear swastika, like people in Ukraine do,\u201d the Belarusian ruler told Igor Babushkin, visiting governor of Russia\u2019s Astrakhan province, in Minsk on May 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted, however, that there must be some difference in the way people celebrate in Belarus and Russia, according to a video posted by his press office on its unofficial Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Russia holds Immortal Regiment processions on Victory Day, while Belarus holds similar processions officially called Belarus Remembers. \u201cIt is actually the same, [people are] carrying images. Some carry [the images of dead soldiers] and some not. This is their business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka made a similar statement at his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Volgograd, Russia, on April 29. But he noted that the ribbon of Saint George had a controversial history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI recommend that you ask historians for complete information on the ribbon of Saint George,\u201d he told Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, Belarusian officials discouraged Belarusians from wearing the ribbon of Saint George, encouraging them to wear the locally-designed apple tree flower symbol on Victory Day instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ceremonies honoring the few remaining war veterans have increasingly become enmeshed in politics of the moment with the Immortal Regiment initiative acquiring a pronounced streak of aggressive militarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
