{"id":137238,"date":"2025-05-08T13:57:26","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T10:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/137238\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"more-belarusians-said-to-apply-for-asylum-in-georgia-ahead-of-procedure-changes","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/137238\/","title":{"rendered":"More Belarusians said to apply for asylum in Georgia ahead of procedure changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>May 8, <em>Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>More Belarusians submit asylum requests in Georgia before its government tightens application procedures, Georgia-based exiled Belarusian rights defender Raman Ki\u015blak has told <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activist, who moved to Georgia in 2021 and has been involved in a legal battle to obtain asylum for more than two years, noted that more Belarusians are now spotted in queues of applicants at the Georgian migration department as of late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some have passports that are soon to expire, while others extend their legal stay in Georgia by one year by visa runs, risking being denied entry upon return, the activist said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusians may also be among some 25,000 foreigners reportedly residing in Georgia illegally. &#8220;The risk of deportation will increase after the adoption of the new law, and I do not rule out that [this will apply] to Belarus, too,\u201d Ki\u015bliak said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planned changes in Georgia\u2019s migration legislation include a shorter asylum application review procedure and a one-month deadline for the application submission on arrival in Georgia. Applications may be considered at the border, along with the simplification of deportation procedures. The new migration law also features a 10-year entry ban for illegal residence and violations of visa-free stay rules in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBelarusians may be affected a lot by this, as they are in the most precarious position. Other foreigners can exchange their passports at the embassies of their countries, but we can&#8217;t,\u201d Ki\u015bliak said, referring to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s September 2023 edict, discontinuing passport and notary services to Belarusians abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new legislation is linked to foreigners\u2019 participation in protests against the ruling pro-Russian Georgian Dream party, accused by opponents of rigging the October parliamentary election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia has not granted a single asylum request from Belarusians since 2019 yet the application submission legalizes foreigners\u2019 stay in the country during its processing and appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More like this: <a href=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/ru\/news\/136967\/\">Georgia rejected 13 asylum requests from Belarusians this year<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 8, Pozirk.
