May 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A Belarusian court convicted at least three officers of special operation forces based in Marjina Horka of conspiracy in 2022-2023 to stage a military coup, Juryj Ziankovi\u010d, recently released from a Belarus’ prison with the help of Washington, told journalists yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their prison terms range from 15 to 20 years, added the Belarusian politician and lawyer with US citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTheir names are unknown, but the information is reliable enough, and I can take responsibility for my words in this case,\u201d the former prisoner said, noting that a military coup is quite possible against the country\u2019s authoritarian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are no good options to change the government in Belarus now,” he said. “There is no direct relationship between the way people vote in elections and the results of the elections, yet society has certain expectations. Every person is mortal, including Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. Most Belarusians are waiting for the problem to solve itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ziankovi\u010d admitted that four years ago he did not object to the military taking power in Belarus. The idea of the army’s intervention \u201cwas in the air\u201d after the disputed 2020 presidential election, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He blamed Lieutenant Colonel Ivan \u017dura\u016dski of the General Staff for framing him and the other defendants, including Alaksandar Fiaduta and Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) Chairman Ryhor Kastusio\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017dura\u016dski infiltrated the group that planned reforms in Belarus, claiming to guarantee support from \u201cfive battalions – two tank battalions and three motorized rifle battalions,\u201d Ziankovi\u010d said. Later, the officer testified against the defendants, who were sentenced to lengthy prison terms on charges of conspiracy to seize power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact that we contacted Mr. \u017dura\u016dski instead of the officers from Marjina Horka led to the arrests of Mr. Kastusio\u016d, Mr. Fiaduta and me,\u201d he noted, denying plans to assassinate \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ziankovi\u010d was released in late April after a guilty verdict passed in September 2022, when he was given 11 years in prison. Later, he was given two more years on disobedience charges. Rights groups considered him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician thanked US President Donald Trump for securing his release, noting that at least 15 US diplomats were involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
