May 15, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Switzerland joined the 16th package of sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) on Belarus and Russia in February on the third anniversary of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Federal Council\u2019s press office reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bern expanded the sanctions against Belarus to include stricter export restrictions and a ban on imports of Belarusian primary aluminium, it noted, citing the need to “further harmonize sanctions against Belarus with the existing sanctions against Russia” and prevent their circumvention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Norway and Ukraine also aligned themselves with the EU\u2019s 16th package of sanctions and introduced restrictions against 25 individuals and seven entities in Belarus. The groups cited the current situation in Belarus and Minsk\u2019s involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
