May 15, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, the Belarusian General Staff and Security Council are briefly mentioned as Russia\u2019s accomplices in the documents on a special tribunal on aggression against Ukraine, opposition politician Franak Via\u010dorka told the Obychnoye Utro<\/em> YouTube show yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement follows an earlier announcement by a coalition of 35 Council of Europe members on the completion of the tribunal preparation stage. Belarusian pro-democracy activists reportedly have access to some of those papers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proceedings may take years, Viacorka said, noting that the Belarusian opposition focuses on securing accountability for \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials while stressing that the Belarusian people is held hostage by the political regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immunity for state rulers poses a certain problem since \u0141uka\u0161enka, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin, cannot be held accountable directly, he admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, \u201c\u0141uka\u0161enka and his closest military commanders, who provided the infrastructure [for Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine] will be there [at the tribunal],” the politician said. Those involved in supplying weapons to Russia that are used in the war against Ukraine should also be held accountable, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should \u0141uka\u0161enka decide to resign, he could be offered \u201cexit routes\u201d which, however, \u201cdoes not exempt all other direct participants in the crimes from responsibility,\u201d Via\u010dorka noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja discussed the potential prosecution of \u0141uka\u0161enka at the tribunal with PACE President Theodoros Roussopoulos at a meeting in Luxembourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
