May 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime’s effort to sign more bilateral extradition accords may result in an extended list of countries dangerous to visit for its opponents, said \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s counsel Leanid Maroza\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was commenting on remarks by Justice Minister Ja\u016dhien Kavalenka in the House of Representatives yesterday. The minister presented a ratification bill for the Belarusian-Pakistani extradition agreement and was asked if there were other deals in the pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are now working with Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Brazil, Cambodia and Nicaragua,” Kavalenka answered. “These countries are well-known in the framework of our trade and economic cooperation and interaction at the political and diplomatic level. Furthermore, there are three agreements for which Belarus has implemented all inter-state procedures necessary for signing. These are the South African Republic, Korea [sic] and Sri Lanka.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe new extradition agreements will be used for the next stage of repression,” Cichano\u016dskaja’s press office quoted Maroza\u016d as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, the regime targets its critics using the fight against crime as a pretext.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After forcing tens of thousands of citizens into exile, \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime is now seeking to reach them through extradition treaties and Interpol mechanisms, Maroza\u016d said. “It’s classic double victimization \u2013 first in Belarus, then in exile,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We will surely inform our international partners and organizations about the potential risks of using bilateral extradition agreements for politically motivated persecution.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 14, the House of Representatives also ratified a Belarusian-Russian accord on mutual enforcement of court orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
