May 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has voiced skepticism over the upcoming Russian-Ukrainian negotiations in Istanbul, her press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an illusion that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarus’ Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka want peace, she told the Impact’25 conference in Pozna\u0144, Poland. “However, war benefits them. It supports their economy and allows them to keep society under control,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now it’s time for the democratic world to show its teeth: we have the tools and means to force the dictators to change their behavior,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Putin proposed holding direct talks in Istanbul instead of accepting the 30-day ceasefire Kyiv and its European partners insisted on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he will wait for his Russian counterpart in Istanbul, stressing that Putin could demonstrate his readiness for a peace settlement by his visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Russian president has sent a low-level delegation led by his aide Vladimir Medinskiy to the talks. The delegation also includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Main Intelligence Directorate head Igor Kostyukov, Deputy Defense Minister Aleksandr Fomin and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian leader has assigned Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to conduct the negotiations. Explaining his decision, he has noted that the general speaks Ukrainian, Russian, English and Turkish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
