May 19, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The weakening of price controls could have contributed to inflation acceleration in Belarus last month, the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) said in its recent weekly macroeconomic report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price growth accelerated in all key areas, with the most notable increase in the cost of consumer goods, up 8.3 percent in April, the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month ago, the Belarusian government shortened the list of goods subject to price controls by 36.3 percent, from 331 to 211 items, and simplified the procedure for coordination of price increases by companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weakening of the Belarusian rubel against the Russian currency and a seasonal spike in fruit and vegetable prices also fuelled inflation, the EDB added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer prices rose by 6.5 percent year on year last month after a 5.9-percent growth posted in March, according to the National Statistical Committee (Bie\u0142stat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
