May 19, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>A total of 77 people have been convicted of high treason in criminal cases brought by the Belarusian Investigative Committee, its chairman D\u017amitry Hara told a legal forum in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The committee is known to misuse criminal treason articles to punish dissent or any collaboration with foreign-funded think tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, in April it completed a preliminary investigation in a high treason case against two women and a man suspected of conducting opinion polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee accused the suspects of passing information on various aspects of life in Belarus to \u201cfoundations and non-profit organizations operating under the patronage of foreign secret services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the St. Petersburg conference, Hara baselessly accused pro-democracy protesters of Nazism, mirroring Russian rhetoric on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigators identified and collected evidence that allowed “to bring to justice more than 6,000 extremists hatching a plan for a violent seizure of power,” he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five leaders of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a Ukrainian military unit labeled by the Belarusian regime as a “terrorist organization,” were sentenced to 12\u201320 years in prison. Six Belarusian volunteer fighters are in custody in Belarus and 125 are wanted, Hara said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his speech, he also repeated the baseless claim perpetuated by Belarusian propaganda that peaceful protesters against election fraud in 2020 used Nazi ideas and symbols and attempted a coup d’\u00e9tat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The instigators “drew marginalized people and criminals in their ranks to organize mass riots, following the example of the Nazis and their aides,” he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The main goal of the coup attempt in 2020 was to overthrow the constitutional order and form a puppet nationalist state, turning Belarus into an ‘anti-Russia,'” Hora said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
