May 23, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The appointment of U\u0142adzimir Karanik, an outsider to the academic community, as head of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) reflects the current state of research in Belarus, former NAS employee Siarhiej Biesarab told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though Karanik holds a PhD in medicine, his achievements are non-existent as he has no serious publications that researchers of this rank usually have, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, Karanik has an \u201cabsolutely gloomy\u201d presence in contrast to his predecessor U\u0142adzimir Husako\u016d, perceived as a funny man by the academics, who saw him as \u201ca simple guy from agriculture who rose to the \u2018minister of science\u2019 and struggled as hard as he could to carry this burden,\u201d Biesarab said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire NAS agriculture department mourns his dismissal as he lobbied for funding for its most unrealistic projects, the researcher added. Husako\u016d was also known for his interest in folklore and was reportedly suspected of nepotism, as his sons head NAS institutes, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husako\u016d had served as NAS head since 2013. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, who earlier blasted the NAS as useless, replaced him with former Deputy Prime Minister Karanik yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
