May 23, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The interior ministry has added 17 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 5,314, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All recently blacklisted persons were convicted on charges that authorities use to persecute political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list features Dani\u0142a \u010cybisa\u016d, convicted on extremist-related charges, and Leanid Cierabiej, serving a three-year prison term for allegedly inciting hatred, insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials, abusing the state symbols and participating in protests. Rights groups consider their persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antanina Cierabiej, the latter’s wife, is also on the list. She was given two years of restricted freedom in home confinement on protest-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other additions include Siarhiej Martysievi\u010d, Ihar Byka\u016d, Alaksandar \u0160ajpak, Vital Piatrenka, Kry\u015bcina \u0141apko\u016dskaja, Maryna \u0141uc, Aleh Jaro\u0161anka\u016d and Alaksandar Har\u0161uno\u016d. Authorities persecuted them on charges ranging from inciting hatred to association with opposition groups that Minsk branded extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sentences of Zachar Fra\u0142o\u016d, Natalla Pro\u0144ka, Vital Buchta, Ja\u016dhien Vakul\u010dyk, Iryna Miranovi\u010d and \u015aviat\u0142ana Barejka remain incomplete, which may mean they are serving non-custodial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
