May 24, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Latvia has not allowed at least 1,697 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus since the start of May, with attempts exceeding the April level, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irregular border crossings into Latvia spiked 83.7 percent year on year to 3,688 since January. The attempts stood between 75 and 132 in the first three months of the year before jumping to 1,666 in April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union has not allowed at least 13,100 foreigners to enter irregularly from Belarus this year,  with 55.3 percent of attempts targeting Poland; 28.2 percent, Latvia and 5.6 percent, Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
