May 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> European partners who support Belarusian pro-democracy forces underestimated the importance of Belarus for the European Union’s security, opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka said yesterday at a Belarusian diaspora conference in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU did not recognize the importance of the role Minsk played during Russia’s war on Ukraine and may not be aware that Moscow may use Belarus’ geographic position for preparing an attack on the bloc, he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the EU had an \u201cappropriate strategy\u201d for Belarus in 2020, the war in Ukraine \u201ccould have been avoided,\u201d \u0141atu\u0161ka said, citing a high-ranking European diplomat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU also lacks a differentiated view on Belarus in contrast to Russia, the politician stressed.  Belarusians cannot be treated as Russians as Belarusian society opposes the war and supports democracy, while Russians are loyal to their government, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
