May 26, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The long history of friendly relations between Belarus and Georgia should become a “solid foundation for the resumption of mutually beneficial partnerships,\u201d says Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s congratulatory message to Georgia’s President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Independence Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor a millennium, the Georgian people fought courageously for their statehood and their identity and believed in the bright future of their country that was a place where the interests of large empires clashed,\u201d the message says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk appreciates Tbilisi’s efforts to \u201cpreserve sovereignty\u201d and believes that these will ensure prosperity for Georgia, he noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relations between Belarus and Georgia have been improving recently, \u0141uka\u0161enka said last week while announcing the appointment of Mika\u0142aj Raha\u0161\u010duk as ambassador to Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kavelasvili of the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party was elected president in late 2024 through the electoral college controlled by his associates rather than by a direct vote. Earlier this year, he congratulated \u0141uka\u0161enka on extending his 30-year rule in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia was one of the main destinations for Belarusians fleeing politically-motivated reprisals that continue unabated since the 2020 crackdown on postelection protests. However, over the past six years, Tbilisi has not granted a single asylum request from Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
