May 26, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>A judge in Minsk has sentenced a foreign national to three months in jail for facilitating illegal migration from Belarus to the European Union, the state-run news agency Minsk-Novosti<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This report, as well as occasional press statements from the interior ministry on police operations to round up undocumented migrants, come as a surprise as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by the European Union sanctions, has repeatedly declared that his security forces would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charge of facilitating illegal migration carries punishment of up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defendant came to Minsk in July 2024, intending to travel on to the EU. The report said that he stayed in the capital illegally, sharing an apartment with other undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His acquaintances, who allegedly were running an illegal migration ring, offered him work. His duties allegedly included meeting people desperately trying to get into the EU, briefing them on the rules of stay in Belarus, registering SIM cards, exchanging currency and buying food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The ’employers’ promised him to facilitate his transfer to Germany in the future,” the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested him in December. “An investigation found that the accused organized the illegal migration of at least six foreigners to EU territory. He pleaded fully guilty and repented of the crime,” Minsk-Novosti<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 24, the Minsk region’s police announced the expulsion of 19 irregular immigrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan. All of them allegedly attempted to enter the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
