May 27, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus between May 24 and 26 as authorities filed new criminal charges against opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Dziadok. One of the charges is linked to inciting hatred, a Telegram channel linked to law enforcers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dziadok was accused of disobeying the prison administration days before his scheduled release in early April. He is held at a pre-trial detention center in Kaladzi\u010dy near Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anarchist activist Siarhiej Ramana\u016d was given 18 months in prison on disobedience charges, which increased his prison term to 24 years and five months, the AChK-Belarus<\/em> Telegram channel reported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed Anatol \u0141atu\u0161ka, cousin of exiled opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, was sentenced to six months in prison on similar charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. In September 2022 he was given six years in prison on charges widely seen as politically motivated. Last year, he was transferred to a closed prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Homiel-based lawyers have been recently charged in criminal cases linked to politics, a source who wished to remain anonymous told Pozirk<\/em>. Two were released on their own recognizance, while one is held in a pre-trial detention center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BySol Solidarity Foundation helped Viasna volunteer Andrej \u010capiuk and Alaksiej Mazuka leave Belarus after both had served prison terms in politically-motivated cases, its head Andrej Stry\u017eak said on Telegram. Both were blacklisted as terrorists in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, rights defenders documented 669 confession videos shot by Belarusian law enforcers. Some videos were enhanced with humiliating special effects and animation, Special Rapporteur Nils Mui\u017enieks said in his recent report, noting that civil or political rights in Belarus are not improving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed military analyst Jahor Lebiadok was transferred to a closed prison, a pro-government propaganda channel said. He is serving a five-year prison term on extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration of Penal Colony No 15 in Mahilo\u016d reduced the size of towels for inmates to 40×60 cm. It also banned families from bringing herbal teas and chicory for long visits, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 27, human rights defenders identified at least 1,186 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
