May 27, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Latvia has not allowed at least 1,873 third-country foreigners to enter irregularly via Belarus this month, while Poland thwarted 3,446 attempts, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riga reported an increase of 29.3 percent in attempts compared to a similar period in April, while irregular crossings into Poland soared almost 70 percent. Lithuania reported a decrease of 31.7 percent in clandestine entries, which dropped to 192 this month yet posted a significant growth year on year since January with 756 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, Latvia thwarted at least 3,864 attempts, which spiked 87 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Poland reported 9,335 irregular crossings, some 40 percent fewer than last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
