May 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus was “a timely step of strategic deterrence that will cool hotheads,” Belarusian Security Council head Alaksandar Valfovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to state media, Valfovi\u010d spoke at the international conference of senior security officials this week in Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled that Moscow and Minsk had decided to station the Oreshnik missile system in his country. “We are working on it. Statements by some Ukrainian officials and other leaders that it’s a bluff and there’s nothing to it\u2026 Let them comfort themselves with hope,” Valfovi\u010d said. “We are confident in what we are doing. This weapon will be a reliable shield against any aggression.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The general asserted that the\u00a0system would allow\u00a0the military “to inflict unacceptable damage on the potential enemy in case of aggression against Belarus, but we wouldn’t want it to come to that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Russia’s RIA Novosti<\/em>, Valfovi\u010d added that “the decision the heads of our states made will be implemented by the end of the year.” “The issues have been sorted and the Oreshnik sites have already been chosen in Belarus,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are currently no nuclear weapons in Belarus, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (FISU) said earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are carriers. There are airplanes. There are Iskander tactical operational missile systems. But the fact is that Belarus does not have nuclear weapons,” FISU head Oleh Ivashchenko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reported that Belarus is building storage facilities, adding, “\u0141uka\u0161enka says that they will have the Oreshnik by the end of the year, but it looks like wishful thinking. There is nothing like it today and it is unlikely to appear.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
