May 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> On the solemn anniversary of Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski’s final arrest, Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski posted a brief statement on X. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Exactly five years ago, the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime arrested Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, a democratic opposition activist,” Sikorski said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He remains in prison to this day\u2014his fate behind bars has been unknown for more than two years. We recall him every day by supporting the fight for a free, democratic Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Senators Roger Wicker, Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin issued a similar statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“On this troubling anniversary, we honor Siarhiej and all those who have risked everything to challenge a ruthless dictator,” they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Siarhiej is one of nine political prisoners in Belarus who are held incommunicado\u2014with no one on the outside able to confirm they are even alive. More than a thousand others languish in prisons on sham charges for \u2018crimes\u2019 as small as a comment on social media.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senators demanded the unconditional release of the regime’s prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, Cichano\u016dski expressed his intention to run for president and was arrested for an alleged misdemeanor. His wife, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, ran in his place. After the end of his detention, Cichano\u016dski joined the wife’s campaign but was soon arrested again. Judges sentenced him to nearly 20 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since March 9, 2023, Cichano\u016dski has been held incommunicado. Human rights groups regard him as a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
