May 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A decrease in oppressive pressure was registered ahead of the “presidential election” in January 2025, but it increased again in February, sociologist Hienad\u017a Kor\u0161una\u016d said in his article “The Cycle Is Broken: Reprisals Outside the Calendar.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation further deteriorated in March and especially in April, the Center for New Ideas’ senior researcher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the overall dynamics can be assessed using open data on political prisoners, dissolved NGOs, terrorist and extremist lists, and censorship trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article contains monthly data on oppressive pressure from October 2024 to April 2025. In particular, 139 people were declared “extremists” in April, a monthly record for the timeframe; nine organizations were designated as “extremist groups.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of trials to ban certain content as extremist peaked at 150 in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After analyzing these and other data, the sociologist concluded that the government’s old logic of “elections \u2013 repression \u2013 sanctions \u2013 release [of political prisoners]” has broken down. The “repressive machine” has become independent of the cycle. “It functions as a self-sufficient mechanism for maintaining discipline, spreading fear and suppressing even the potential for dissent,” Kor\u0161una\u016d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In these conditions, any release of political prisoners can only be welcomed. However, there is no hope for systemic changes in the very near future,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
