May 30, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The interior ministry has added 28 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 5,342, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New additions include Catholic priest Hienrych Aka\u0142atovi\u010d, sentenced to 11 years on a high treason charge for allegedly \u201cspying for Poland and the Vatican.\u201d Rights defenders consider his persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others are Ihar Draby\u0161e\u016dski, Iryna Syr\u017eyk, Palina Pitkievi\u010d, Ta\u0107ciana and Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Bierazaviec, D\u017amitryj Son\u010dyk and Aleh Cimo\u0161anka\u016d sentenced to prison terms on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recently blacklisted individuals include a group of people convicted on protest-related charges:\u00a0 Ja\u016dhien \u0160a\u016dlinski, Mikita Navasio\u0142a\u016d, Arciom Ku\u010dynski, Vadzim Bahatka, Illa and Kaciaryna Marcinovi\u010d, Volha Kurylonak, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d La\u016ddanski, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Kavale\u016dski, Valancina Kavale\u016dskaja, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Draniov, Volha Draniova, Ihar \u010ceb and Ja\u016dhien Ciam\u010dyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raman Hrycal, Viktoryja Dzemidziuk, Pavie\u0142 Chitryk, Ja\u016dhien Bialkievi\u010d, Lidzija Harochava and Mikalaj Ala\u0161kievi\u010d were convicted on charges ranging from inciting hatred to facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups, media outlets or initiatives declared extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
