June 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Party of European Socialists (PES) has expressed solidarity<\/a> with its Belarusian partners\u2014Narodnaja Hramada and the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), which “face increased political suppression from the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was released on May 31, the fifth anniversary since Narodnaja Hramada leader Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d was arrested. According to human rights defenders, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PES found that the state of human rights and democracy in the country has deteriorated dramatically since the disputed 2020 election that left Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The state of human rights in Belarus is of grave concern to the PES,” the statement said. “Since 2020, the Viasna Human Rights Center has documented over 6,940 politically motivated criminal convictions. Currently, at least 219 political prisoners are at increased risk due to health issues.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, the PES recalled that Statkievi\u010d was subjected to “inhumane prison conditions following his campaigning against Russian expansion.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the situation in Belarus has only worsened, the PES said. After \u0141uka\u0161enka’s next disputed election in 2025, the Belarusian government declared the BSDP (Hramada) an “extremist faction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the first time in the history of Belarus that a democratic opposition party that legally existed from 1991 to 2023 has been recognized as ‘extremist.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
