June 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Estonian government backed<\/a> Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna’s proposal to terminate a deal with Belarus on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 29, the government’s press office quoted Tsahkna as calling the termination a signal that companies and residents of the country involved in a war of aggression would not receive tax benefits in Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By participating in Russia’s war against Ukraine since 2022, Belarus has violated the fundamental norms of international law, he said. Tallinn must resist such actions by all means, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He accused Belarus of unilaterally suspending the application of key provisos of the tax treaty, underscoring that the deal does not provide for such a pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Considering the general number of taxpayers, the termination of the agreement will affect a relatively small group of people, primarily Belarusian residents who receive pensions from Estonia. There are very few Estonian companies still operating in Belarus,” Tsahkna noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the proposal receives universal approval in Estonia, it will notify Belarus by the end of June that the treaty stops on January 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 7, 2024, Belarus decided to temporarily stop honoring its double taxation agreements with 27 Western countries until the end of 2026. The decision means income earned between Belarus and these nations might now be taxed twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
