June 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A group of independent United Nations experts has released a statement raising serious concerns over persisting violations of freedom of association regarding activities of trade unions in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFreedom of association in labor relations is currently absent in Belarus,\u201d says<\/a> the document posted on ohchr.org<\/em>. \u201cWorkers do not have the right to choose whether to join or establish trade unions. Nor are they properly represented in collective bargaining agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement noted the liquidation of independent trade unions blacklisted as \u201cextremist” groups, extremist and national security-related charges against leaders and members, prison terms and confiscation of assets as well criminal prosecution in absentia for exiled activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts urged Minsk to fully cooperate with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN human rights mechanisms, the International Labor Organization (ILO) and its supervisory bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, they called on the Belarusian government to implement ILO recommendations that include accepting an international humanitarian mission to assess health and offer medical assistance to jailed trade unionists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarus must end the repression of independent trade unionists, who are also recognized as human rights defenders,\u201d the experts said, calling for an immediate release of all jailed trade union leaders and members imprisoned for exercising their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, the Supreme Court ruled to shut down all Belarusian independent trade unions as well as their umbrella organization, the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International trade union confederations condemned the crackdown and urged authorities to immediately restore workers\u2019 right to freedom of association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
