June 6, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The European Union countries have not allowed at least 1,276 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus in the first five days of June, according to\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania reported 37 attempts; Latvia, 416 and Poland 823, with 180 crossings yesterday alone. Early June accounted for more irregular crossings into the EU than the first two months of 2025, when 1,117 attempts were recorded. The number of irregular crossings rose by about 15 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU foiled at least 16,545 irregular crossings from Belarus, 17 percent fewer than in the same period last year. Poland stopped 11,054 attempts; Latvia, 4,654 and Lithuania, 837. Attempts to cross into Lithuania quadrupled compared to 2024, while crossings into Poland fell almost 37 percent year on year. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
