June 7, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak has authorized the extension of a border area entry ban at the shared border with Belarus by another 90 days starting June 8, the Polish interior ministry’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially introduced one year ago and extended three times, the ban restricted access to some areas along 78 km of the Polish-Belarusian border in Podlaskie Voivodeship. In some sections, the restricted area is 200 meters wide, while in the Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Forest its width is up to four kilometers. The ban does not apply to towns and tourist routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 359 days that passed since the introduction of the ban, irregular border crossings by third-country foreigners from Belarus dropped about 28 percent, the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data confirms the trend, as attempts fell from 31,776 in the 12 months preceding the ban to 22,415 after it entered into force last June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreigners from states with high migration risk try to cross via Belarus into Poland in groups of several dozen, ignoring orders of Polish border guards and sometimes assaulting them, Warsaw said. Their actions seem well organized and coordinated, it added, linking the pressure to Minsk’s hybrid actions to destabilize Poland and other European Union countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
