June 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union’s support for Belarusian pro-democracy institutions is a “strategic investment, not a humanitarian gesture,” said opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka at the Belarus-EU Consultative Group meeting in Brussels on June 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From the standpoint of change, this support helps prevent new political crises,” he said, as quoted by the opposition United Transitional Cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that it is cheaper to back pro-democracy forces than to cover the costs of “using Belarus as a springboard for war against the EU.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician argued that for the Kremlin, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is “a partner and ally, not a hostage.” “There is a popular opinion that \u0141uka\u0161enka is acting under Moscow’s pressure. It is dangerous and misleading. This interpretation blurs responsibility and paves the way to repeating previous mistakes,” he said. \u0141atu\u0161ka stressed the importance of supporting Belarusians in exile. “Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians who have been forced to flee their Motherland because of the regime’s terror and \u0141uka\u0161enka’s support of the war against Ukraine live in Europe,” the politician said. He called this “an unprecedented case in Belarusian history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
