June 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union neighbors did not allow at least 3,037 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus in the first 12 days of June, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania thwarted 57 attempts; Latvia, 748 and Poland, at least 2,232.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of irregular crossings in the 12 days of June exceeded that of March when 2,951 attempts were reported after 431 and 686 in January and February, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the neighboring EU countries have foiled at least 18,306 irregular crossings via Belarus, 13.6 percent fewer than in the same period last year. However, attempts to enter Lithuania irregularly quadrupled year on year to 857. Latvia reported a twofold increase to 4,986, while attempts to enter Poland plunged 33 percent to 12,463.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
