June 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Verkhovna Rada deputy Yevhen Shevchenko may face a life sentence if convicted of high treason during martial law, said Olha Chykanova, spokeswoman for Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shevchenko had publicly announced that he is a close friend of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, she said. Experts considered his social media posts and interviews distributed by Russian propaganda outlets harmful to national security and found them to contain misinformation, incitement to hatred and calls to violate the territorial integrity of Ukraine, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chykanova said that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Shevchenko called for peace talks on Ukraine capitulation terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shevchenko has been in detention since November 2024. According to investigators, the MP and his relatives had lucrative businesses in Belarus under \u0141uka\u0161enka’s protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preferential treatment in Belarus enabled the lawmaker to make \u20ac1.5 million in net profit, the State Bureau of Investigation said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shevchenko publicly supported \u0141uka\u0161enka and called on the international community to recognize him as Belarus\u2019 lawful president after the 2020 vote, when the country\u2019s pro-democracy forces rejected the election results. In April 2021, he visited Minsk to meet with \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On his return, he was expelled from the Servant of the People party for his contacts with the Belarusian strongman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Despite repeatedly denying that its army is involved in military operations alongside Russia, Minsk has allowed Belarusian territory to be used by Russian forces for strikes on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
