June 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), on behalf of its member states, has expressed “serious concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East” and “strongly” condemned the strikes carried out by Israel on Iran yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Such aggressive actions against civilian targets, including energy and transport infrastructure, which have resulted in civilian casualties, are a gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter,” the SCO said in a statement<\/a>. “They constitute an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, cause damage to regional and international security and pose serious risks to global peace and stability.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the SCO member states “firmly advocate for the resolution of the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program exclusively through peaceful, political and diplomatic means” and “extend their sincere condolences to the people and government” of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The SCO member states, strictly adhering to the principles and norms of the UN Charter and the SCO Charter, consider any unlawful actions directed against SCO member states unacceptable and reaffirm their unwavering commitment to strengthening international peace and security,” it concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran became a full-fledged SCO member on July 4, 2023. Belarus\u2014exactly one year later, on July 4, 2024. The organization also includes China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s foreign office stated that New Delhi didn’t participate in discussing the SCO statement and effectively excluded the country from the list of signatories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is noteworthy that Minsk has not issued a stand-alone condemnation of Israel\u2019s actions. On June 13, the foreign ministry expressed “deep concern” over “a new round of military escalation between Israel and Iran and reports of civilian deaths, including children.” It called on “all parties involved to exercise restraint and responsibility and avoid actions that could negatively affect the political and diplomatic efforts of the international community aimed at a comprehensive settlement of the situation in the Middle East.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early hours of June 13, the Israel Defense Forces attacked many facilities in Iran to inflict critical damage on the country’s nuclear and missile capability. Nuclear facilities, missile bases, air bases, air defense systems and command posts were targeted. Pinpoint strikes were carried out against military leaders and people involved in developing the Iranian nuclear program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, Iran launched drones toward Israel (all were intercepted, according to Israeli media) and then attacked it with ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to media reports, four people were killed and more than 70 were injured in Israel; about 80 and 320, respectively, in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 14, Israeli authorities announced expanding the operation against Iran and indicated that they sought the collapse of its regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
